Depending on materials there are two types of bed frames available in the market, metal and wooden bed frames. If someone asks how to fix a bed frame, then we need to take
Material is the thing that controls the problem types actually. If your bed frame is made of metal, welding can be a proper way to repair. If the frame is made of wood, the repairing will not be very easy. No doubt, over time, wooden bed frames will split or crack from typical usage.
You must be careful about the specific problem. What is the broken part and is that easily visible? Where is the broken part – side rail, footboard, headboard, post or leg? These are necessary because without selecting the specific problem, you will not be able to fix the particular broken part.
However, wooden frames are highly common due to their availability and durability. Any crack or split on wooden bed frame can be fixed efficiently as the wood remains flawless away from the surface. In this writing, I am going to show you the necessary steps of how to fix a bed frame and finally, you will know the basic ways of repairing a bed frame efficiently.
Fixing Splits and Cracks of a Wooden Bed Frame
Most of the users face this type of problem in their bed frames. Splits and cracks are very common that can damage your bed entirely after a certain time. You need to repair splits and cracks as soon as possible as your bed doesn’t have enough support. The split can be seen at the end of the frame or at horizontal grain areas. There are several ways to fix these problems such as using clamps, glue and scrap woods.
Step 1: Striping Parts
Strip different parts of the bed as you are going to repair your bed frame. Remove the box springs and the mattress. Keep the slats in right place.
Step 2: Cleaning the Splinters
Locate the crack exactly. Get a screwdriver and insert that into the crack. Do this from inside of your bed frame. Now, pry this open very carefully. Use a utility knife to clean out the chips or splinters as needed.
Step 3: Adding Glue
Collect glue which is strong and stable for solid materials. Inject the glue across the whole length of the crack or split. Use any thin rod or thin blade to perfectly smear the glue. Wait until that saturates the glue exactly.
Step 4: Adding Clamps
Now, you need bar clamp. Place it across the bed frame and properly tighten that until glue exudes the range of the crack. C-clamp is another good choice, though they are not strong enough like a bar clamp. Keep the clamps on the frame for the whole night.
Step 5: Reinforcing the Joint
Calculate the dimension of the whole frame. What is the length of the crack or split? Measure the length on the beneath and adjoin 6 inches. Using a miter saw cut down a strip of
Step 6: Drill Holes
You need to pre-drill the scrap piece with a drill/ driver. Now, lay the holes 2 inches distance. Don’t let them line up together by staggering the screw holes.
Step 7: Screw and Glue
Use wood glue on the one side of scrap wood. Over the crack, keep it on the inside. Use the pilot holes on scrap wood to drive
How to Fix Bed Frames Poor Joints Problem
Step 1: Removing the Brackets
Use a drill/ driver to unscrew the screws of the metal brackets. Remove brackets from the bed frame, these are normally folded and 90-degree pieces are placed on each corner of the frame.
Step 2: Disassembling and Cleaning
Check carefully the joints. You will find a square block, generally inserted into a small slot which is on an adjacent piece. If you find them as loose, then there are some problems. You need to tap them separately with a rubber mallet. Use a chisel for scraping off any glue if dried. If they are not loose enough, you do not need to do anything.
Step 3: Adding Tape
Calculate the tenon. Collect secure wood tape, use scissors to separate two pieces of tape. Now, glue the tape on the tenon. You can use tape on every side of the tenon if the joint is much slacker.
Step 4: Reassembling the Frame
Use glue to the slot part which gets the tenon. Now, reassemble the bed frame. Use the rubber mallet to hammer it together.
Step 5: Install the Brackets
Relocate the brackets to maintain the different place of the holes of new and existing screws in the brackets. You can use new or original screws to screw the brackets newly.
How to Fix Broken Bed Frame Slats
You may face slat problems in your bed frame. The solution can be reached by replacing the defective slats, or replacing the short slats with new longer slats. You need to drill 3/16 inches pilot holes at the split ends. Use a 1 ¼ inch screw to perfectly screw the slats. You can use glue on slats for more security.
Center Support for Wider Frame
Another common query, how to fix a broken bed frame with fixing center support. If the specific problem is not defined, but the bed shows some clear problems, the problems might be laid in the box springs. Lumbers are used at the base of the box. Some of the manufacturers often set up the cheap lumber around the box’s perimeter.
Wider bed frame has a center rail in most cases. If it breaks or cracks, the middle part of the bed generally sags. I fixed such problem previously with cutting ¾ by 2 inch solid pine strips. Then, I drilled and screwed them carefully around the box’s perimeter at the base. For more support, I screwed with a 4 inch piece to the center rail.
