My bedroom is not a bedroom only, it is my love, one of my preferred place to spend very own time with comfort and relax. I actually love it and never wish to give it up. However, a bed does not last for lifetime with same conditions. After a specific time it becomes necessary to reinforce a bed frame. So it is a must to know how to reinforce a bed frame.
Once, I noticed some of the major issues in my bed. I realized to reinforce the bed as soon as possible. The condition was like below:
The considerable footboard and headboard were connected with long pieces, thicker than 1×6. Each of them contains a ½ inch lip to grip the slats. The slats generally support the mattress of your bed. There are total 4 slats in the bed. If all the slats are placed correctly, the bed does not create any noise and holds the mattress perfectly.
The problem was that, over the times, the slats shifted and fell out usually only one at once. It made the whole thing uneven and unstable. It started to creak as crazy. I knew that re-setting is not easy. It involves some of the major hassles such as moving the bed, removing the box spring, lifting the mattress and wobbling the slats. These things might be performed several times until the bed is fully reinforced.
I considered few things so that I reinforce my bed completely but –
- Do not make any damage in the bed
- Manage the slats from spoil and falling out
- Make the bed more strong and stable
I thought how to reinforce a bed frame more professionally. Should I attach some more slats? During reinforcing bed frame, should I apply a plywood sheet that has less risk to fall out?
However, my first was stopping squeaking of the bed. If you think you need to stop squeaking and ultimately to reinforce your bed, you can also follow these ways. When you feel asleep, a creaky or squeaky bed annoys and remains you up whole night. Nowadays, most of the wooden bed frames come without screws or bolts near the footboards and headboards. They are attached together by hooks on the bed slats.
They are clutched together by your weight and gravity on the bed frame. There are wooden slats lay horizontally under the mattress. They are generally held down by wooden screws and they have a great possibility to be loose. When creaking occurs, you will need to readjust your bed frame. Moreover, you will need to lubricate the creaking or squeaking parts and tighten connected screws.
First find out the reason why your bed is shaky. If you can find the spot where the creaky is actually coming from, you can point out this as the reason of shaky bed. Lift the mattress from the bed frame. Make sure that you are able to clearly notice the footboard and headboard area. When you are able to pinpoint the squeaky location, you can make decision where to reinforce your bed frame. Depending on the problem, you will tighten screws or lubricate the affected parts.
You will notice a metal joint between the footboard and headboard where the wooden bed frame connects. These joints can abrade together either wood to metal or metal to metal and make the squeak.
The squeaking or creaking generally means two items of the bed structure are squeezed under heavy pressure when weight is on the bedding thus inducing the disturbance and noise. You may need to loose wooden screws of the plank boards or wood slats under the bedding. It can happen that your box spring is the source of squeaking. There is also a solution for this issue as well.
If you are sure that your wooden bed frame is the cause of shaky and the source of squeak, lift the mattress totally. After removing mattress, be sure that all the bolts and screws on the wood planks and slats are tighten securely and not loose. If the bolts or screws are loose then that is most possibly the source of shaky bed. In this case, you can reinforce your bed by tightening all bolts and screws.
Add additional screws to particular parts if needed. When all screws and bolts are tight, make sure to readjust the parts of your bed frame that connect together. Lift both the bed rails and check the footboards and headboards joints where they are attached with wood bed frame. Confirm that all the relevant parts are placed securely. If tightening bolts and screws does not work, you will need to lubricate the squeaky parts.
If you consider lubricating the bed frame to reinforce bed frame, you can use bees wax. A candle can be helpful in this condition. Try to avoid chemical lubricant or cooking oil, because they smell and produce dust. The above is the actual ways that teach you how to reinforce a wooden bed frame. After repeated trying if you can’t fix the problem, you can take help from your friends or any experienced person.
